Project Overview
HK Gold Water
E-commerce Platform for Plumbing & Pool Accessories
HK Gold Water was designed to modernize the online presence of a company specializing in plumbing equipment, sanitary accessories, swimming pool systems, and water treatment products. The objective was to replace a traditional product catalog with a complete digital commerce platform where customers could easily discover products, compare options, and place orders without needing to contact the company manually.
The project focused on creating an experience that feels familiar to users who regularly shop online while remaining simple enough for customers who may be purchasing construction materials or plumbing equipment for the first time. Every design decision aimed to reduce friction between discovering a product and completing an order, allowing visitors to navigate the catalog with confidence.
Before starting the design, I analyzed several successful e-commerce platforms to understand how users search for products, browse categories, compare prices, and move through the purchasing process. Rather than overwhelming customers with technical information, the interface presents products using large imagery, clear pricing, and straightforward navigation. This approach makes even specialized plumbing products feel approachable and easy to explore. General e-commerce UX research consistently shows that streamlined navigation, clear product information, and simplified checkout improve conversion rates and customer satisfaction.
One of the primary challenges was organizing a large inventory that included products from multiple categories such as sanitary accessories, plumbing systems, pool equipment, and maintenance supplies. A carefully structured category system combined with search functionality allows customers to quickly locate products without navigating through unnecessary pages. Featured collections and product recommendations were introduced to help users discover relevant items naturally.
Designing the product detail page required balancing technical specifications with purchasing confidence. Customers often need detailed product information before making a buying decision, especially for plumbing equipment. The solution was to separate specifications, descriptions, and customer reviews into organized tabs while keeping the product image, pricing, stock availability, and purchase actions visible at all times. This improves readability without distracting from the purchasing process.
The shopping cart and checkout flow were designed with simplicity as the highest priority. Instead of dividing the process into multiple confusing steps, customers can review quantities, apply promotional codes, verify shipping costs, and complete their delivery information within a clean and predictable interface. Since the platform targets the Algerian market, the checkout was adapted to local purchasing habits by supporting Cash on Delivery as the primary payment method and collecting delivery information using Wilaya and Commune fields instead of international address formats.
Another important challenge involved building trust. Many customers purchasing construction or plumbing equipment prefer buying from businesses they consider reliable. To reinforce credibility, the interface emphasizes product photography, availability status, transparent pricing, clear shipping information, and a consistent visual identity throughout the entire purchasing journey. A clean white interface combined with a professional blue color palette communicates reliability while allowing product images to remain the visual focus.
A multilingual experience was also integrated into the platform to support a broader audience. The interface was designed so that language switching does not affect layout consistency, ensuring that navigation, product pages, and checkout remain intuitive regardless of the selected language. Responsive layouts were carefully planned to provide an equally smooth experience across desktop, tablet, and mobile devices.
From a technical perspective, the project was designed as a scalable full-stack e-commerce solution. The frontend architecture is suitable for implementation using Next.js, React, TypeScript, and Tailwind CSS, while the backend can be powered by Node.js, Express.js, and PostgreSQL. Product management, customer accounts, authentication, shopping cart synchronization, order processing, and inventory management were all planned as modular backend services that can evolve as the business grows.
Building an e-commerce platform also required solving several usability problems throughout the design process. Early layouts contained too much information on individual pages, making products harder to compare. By simplifying visual hierarchy, increasing whitespace, and introducing reusable product cards, the browsing experience became significantly more comfortable. Search functionality was refined to reduce the time required to locate products, while the checkout flow was redesigned to eliminate unnecessary steps that could increase cart abandonment.
The final result is a complete digital commerce platform tailored specifically for businesses operating in the plumbing and water equipment industry. Instead of functioning as a simple company website, HK Gold Water provides customers with a professional online shopping experience where they can discover products, review specifications, manage purchases, and complete orders efficiently. The design also establishes a scalable foundation for future features such as online payments, customer dashboards, order tracking, wishlists, product reviews, and advanced inventory management.
Working on this project strengthened my understanding of specialized e-commerce design, particularly for technical industries where usability, trust, and product organization are just as important as visual appeal. It demonstrated how thoughtful UX decisions can simplify complex product catalogs while creating an online shopping experience that feels modern, accessible, and optimized for business growth.
